S02#E08 Nothing Personal - The back office of war

In this episode you hear from Russian photographer Nikita Teryoshin about Nothing Personal, a project that shows the behind the scenes of war, a complete antithesis of what a battlefield is: a huge amusement park for adults in which there is wine, snacks and shiny weapons. Plastic mannequins are corpses and the war action is staged in an artificial environment in front of ministers, heads of state, generals and businessmen. At a time of conflicts and geopolitical tensions in various parts of the globe, Teryoshin's work becomes even more valuable, as it allows us to understand a small part of what is behind an industry that aims to create the most effective tools to take human lives. The exhibition is on display at the NARRATIVA’s gallery until December 21st.

Masterclass NARRATIVA | Elisa Freitas | Photography and Territory 2024 Winner.

Do Mar, a project developed in the Masterclass NARRATIVA 23/24, has just won the Open CallPhotography and Territory 2024, promoted by the Center for Studies in Photography in Tomar. The work will be exhibited at Casa dos Cubos, between January and March 2025.

Do Mar, by Elisa Freitas, delves into the significant transformations that São Bartolomeu do Mar, a small community on the Minho coast of Portugal, faces due to coastal erosion. The project moves away from the annual pilgrimage, by which land is sought, and focuses on the physical evolution of the landscape, marked by the disappearance of the beach, but also by the social changes that shaped the community over time in the wake of this climatic event.

House of Photography | NARRATIVA Pop-Up Exhibition

There were two days of open doors at the former North Military Maintenance, in Beato, to show what could become the future Bairro do Grilo: the largest cultural complex in Lisbon, where NARRATIVA designs a plural and aggregating House of Photography.

This pioneering project, designed by the Working Group for World Youth Day, which took place in 2023, is of extreme importance for a city like Lisbon, as it allows to concentrate in one place a cultural offer that includes photography, illustration, music, dance, theater and other artistic and cultural expressions, while also contemplating the creation of affordable housing and infrastructure designed for the citizens of Lisbon.

More than a central hub for photography in Portugal, House of Photography, located in Bairro do Grilo, can channel synergies to collaborate with all projects that find a home in this area of Lisbon with immense potential.

NARRATIVA developed a pop-up exhibition for 48 hours, based on its collection, which sought to reflect, in three rooms of this industrial complex, the work it has developed over the last two years, showcasing emerging national authors and making accessible to the Portuguese public the work of award-winning international photographers for free.

NARRATIVA is a photography center open to the community, which maintains free access to its cultural offerings thanks to the support of two patrons – Fujifilm Portugal and Moldura Minuto.

Thank you to the hundreds of people who, for 48 hours, went to Beato to learn about the plan for House of Photography and Bairro do Grilo.

For now, it is up to us not to let what could become an emblematic and differentiating place for Portuguese culture fall into oblivion.

Ciclo NARRATIVA | ROOF guided visit

The last day of Ciclo 2024 began with a guided visit of ROOF exhibition, by Mário Cruz.

When ROOF began to be developed, in 2013, the city was different. Lisbon, however, was already showing the first signs that a housing crisis would affect the most vulnerable sectors of Portuguese society.

ROOF has witnessed, over ten years, the drama of a reality that is now exposed through a book and an exhibition that shows the hidden side of the housing crisis in Lisbon, Europe's number one tourist destination.

The city now hides the faces of those who live in inhumane conditions and those who fight a lonely battle for decent access to housing.

These people survive on the scraps of what others discard and occupy abandoned buildings, boarded-up factories, vacant schools or rusty shipping containers in an effort to transform them into something that resembles a home.

The author has lived in Brazil for ten years, precisely to document today's Amazon, a place where indigenous communities fight for survival in the face of rampant deforestation.

More than in other places, in the Amazon it is clear that land is worth more than human life. And on the path to the destruction of the planet, the next step for humanity is its own extinction.
