Book Presentation: Flower(s), by Teresa Freitas
Flower(s), by photographer Teresa Freitas, investigates the relationships between people and flowers in different geographical locations, observing how certain species have shaped collective identities through cultural practices, rituals, local economies, and daily life. Combining a documentary approach with a personal language, photography is used as a means to preserve and give visibility to stories that remain outside the usual gaze.
The first volume unfolds in Takase, a rural village in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. Born from a poem, the narrative focuses on safflower, a flower cultivated for centuries and historically associated with the production of a rare carmine pigment reserved for the elites. Today, it continues to play a central role in seasonal rituals and community identity. Through the documentation of work, gestures, and daily life, the project reveals how a seemingly fragile element can concentrate memory, continuity, and belonging.
Designed as a collection, each book focuses on a specific flower and the community that cares for and cultivates it. This first volume establishes a dialogue between photography, culture, and tradition, constructing a visual narrative guided by color.
Free entry.
